Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to heal your body, mind, spirit. This
form of healing dates back to Ancient times, when essential oils were used daily
for many diverse purposes.
Essential Oils one of natures most powerful forms, and yet we know so little
about them.
Modern medicine is always disputing their power, even though these oils are used
in many of today’s drugs, foods, drinks, and cosmetics.
But fortunately for us, we are seeing more and more people revisiting and
re-evaluating nature and all that she has to offer. People are seeking
complementary ways to stay healthy and balanced. One of these methods is with
aromatherapy. We
do not advocate that essential oils should replace conventional medicine, yet we
do believe that they have a prominent role to play in maintaining general health
and mental wellbeing.

What is the history of aromatherapy? |
The term
“aromatherapy” was first used in the early 1900’s by a French chemist named
Rene Maurice Gattefosse. Dr. Gattefosse reportedly burned his hands in a
laboratory explosion, submerged them in a nearby vat of lavender essential oil,
and discovered that his burns healed quickly and without scarring. The use of
essential oils, however, dates back thousands of years.
Egyptian papyrus
manuscripts dating as early as 2000 B.C. talk of the use of medicinal herbs and
oils. Essential oils were used by the Egyptians for medicines, perfumes,
cosmetics, and embalming. When Tutankhamen’s tomb was opened, it held ointments
containing essential oils that were still fragrant.
The Greeks used
essential oils for perfume, therapeutics, and to combat plague. Greek physician
Pedacius Dioscorides wrote 1200 years ago of herbal applications similar to
those used in aromatherapy today.
The Romans used
essential oils for perfume and purification of temples, and in ceremonies and
rituals.
Evidence of
Chinese use of essential oils for therapeutic applications comes from the book
Chinese Yellow Emperor Book of Internal Medicine, written around 2697
B.C. This book contains information on more than 300 plants and their use in
medicine.
Even the Bible
tells of gifts of frankincense and myhrr (plants containing essential oils high
in immune stimulating properties) given by the three wise men to baby Jesus.
Some of the most
fascinating stories about essential oils date back to the 17th century when the
Black Plague was ravaging Europe. The town of Bucklersbury, England, the center
of the European lavender trade, was unaffected by the plague even though large
numbers of people in surrounding towns were dying from the disease. Physicians
in European towns placed lavender in beak-like masks placed around the nose,
which protected them from the plague. Not only does lavender have powerful
immune-stimulating and antimicrobial properties, but the smell appears to repel
fleas, which were known to carry the Black Plague disease.
In World War II,
therapeutic grade essential oils were used on the battlefield when antibiotics
were unavailable, saving lives of many soldiers that might otherwise have died.
